ChatGPT vs Claude for Business
A practical comparison for New Zealand SMEs deciding which AI assistant to standardise on. We skip the benchmark wars and focus on what actually matters when you are running a business: data privacy, building useful agents, and getting real value for the money.
The short answer
Both tools are excellent. For most NZ SMEs the question is not which model is smarter on a leaderboard, but which one fits the way your team already works. ChatGPT wins on ecosystem, custom agents, and structured output. Claude wins on long-document work, calm long-form writing, and a cleaner default privacy posture.
If you have to pick one to roll out across the business this quarter, pick the one your team will actually open every day. Then layer the other in through your automation stack where it earns its keep.
Data privacy
Claude does not train on your inputs by default. ChatGPT matches that on Team and Enterprise, but not on Free or Plus.
Custom agents
ChatGPT Custom GPTs are the most mature shared-agent builder. Claude Projects shine when you need huge context.
Cost for SMEs
Per seat plans are similar. For high-volume backend automation, Claude Haiku and Sonnet via API are very cost effective.
Side-by-side comparison
| Area | ChatGPT | Claude |
|---|---|---|
| Data privacy and IP control | Team and Enterprise plans keep your prompts out of training by default. Free and Plus tiers do not, so staff using personal logins is a real risk for client data. | Claude does not train on customer inputs or outputs by default across Pro, Team, and API. A cleaner story to take to a board or a privacy-conscious client. |
| Custom agents and assistants | Custom GPTs are mature, easy to share inside a Team workspace, and connect to your own files, actions, and APIs. Strong fit for repeatable internal workflows. | Projects let you load reference docs, brand voice, and instructions per workspace. Less polished agent builder, but the long context window makes large knowledge bases practical. |
| Long documents and context | Handles long context well, but you usually break big files into chunks for best results. Strong at structured outputs, JSON, and code generation. | Native 200K token context handles entire SOP libraries, contracts, or transcripts in a single prompt. Often the better choice for analysis, drafting, and summarising long material. |
| Tone and writing quality | Versatile across tones. Great for short-form marketing, ads, scripts, and structured deliverables. Can feel formulaic without strong prompting. | Tends to produce calmer, more considered long-form writing. A favourite for proposals, reports, and client-facing copy that needs to sound human. |
| Integrations and ecosystem | Wide ecosystem. Native Zapier, Make, n8n, Microsoft 365, and a large plugin and SDK community. Easiest to slot into existing stacks. | Smaller ecosystem, but well supported by Anthropic SDKs, Zapier, Make, and most major automation tools. Strong API reliability for production workflows. |
| Cost for a small team | Team plan is per seat per month with shared workspaces and admin controls. Predictable for fixed teams, can add up as you scale. | Pro is per seat. Team adds collaboration features. API pricing is competitive for high-volume backend automation, especially with the smaller Haiku and Sonnet models. |
Data privacy, the NZ lens
Under the Privacy Act 2020, you are responsible for client information that flows through any AI tool your team uses. The two practical risks are training data leakage and offshore data storage. Both ChatGPT Team or Enterprise and Claude Pro or Team address the first. Neither hosts data inside New Zealand, so for sensitive industries you still need a clear internal policy on what staff can and cannot paste in.
The single biggest privacy issue we see in audits is not the model, it is staff using personal free accounts to do client work. Standardising on a paid workspace, on either platform, removes most of the risk overnight.
Custom agents that actually save time
Both platforms let you build assistants trained on your own documents, voice, and workflows. ChatGPT Custom GPTs are easier to share inside a team and connect to external actions. Claude Projects are harder to beat when you need an assistant that has read your entire SOP library, contract templates, or last twelve months of transcripts in one go.
For most SMEs we recommend three starter agents: a sales assistant trained on your offers and FAQs, an operations assistant trained on your SOPs, and a content assistant trained on your brand voice. Build them once, use them every day.
Cost effectiveness, honestly
Per seat, the headline pricing is similar. The real cost story shows up in two places. First, in automation: Claude Haiku and Sonnet are very cheap per call, which makes high-volume backend workflows (lead scoring, document parsing, support triage) dramatically cheaper than the GPT-4 class equivalents. Second, in adoption: a tool your team does not open is the most expensive subscription you have.
Budget for licences, but also budget two hours per person for a proper onboarding session. That single decision usually has more impact on ROI than the choice of model.
How to choose, in five questions
- Is most of your AI work long-document analysis, drafting, or summarising? Lean Claude.
- Do you want to ship shared internal agents to a non-technical team quickly? Lean ChatGPT.
- Are you running high-volume backend automation through an API? Compare Claude Haiku and Sonnet against GPT-4o-mini on real workloads.
- Does your team already live in Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace? Pick the one with the smoother integration for your stack.
- Are you regulated, or selling to regulated clients? Document your privacy posture on either platform before rollout, not after.
The practical answer for most SMEs
Standardise on one platform for daily use so your team builds real fluency. Use the other through your automation stack where it is clearly stronger. In our client work that usually looks like ChatGPT Team as the everyday workspace, with Claude wired in via API for long-document workflows and bulk content tasks.
The tool matters less than the workflow. A clear process with the second-best model will beat a vague process with the best model every time.
